Rebrand rollout

How much does a
rebrand rollout cost?

A rebrand rollout costs what its inventory and its constraints make it cost, which is why a flat figure is misleading. The drivers are the number of markets, the size of the technical document library, whether certification and product marking carry the old identity, the number of digital properties, and how staged the transition has to be.

An industrial rollout differs from a consumer one in where the volume sits. It is rarely the website that dominates the estimate. It is more often several thousand datasheets, manuals and declarations of conformity, plus nameplates, packaging artwork and certification documents that name a legal entity.

In detail

What drives the estimate

Why the range is so wide

A single-market rebrand covering one website and a set of templates is a different order of work from a rollout across thirty markets where product marking, packaging artwork and certification documents all carry the outgoing identity.

Both are described as a rebrand rollout. Any figure quoted without an inventory behind it is answering a different question from the one being asked.

The digital estate

Count the properties rather than the pages: the corporate site, country subsidiary sites, product microsites, distributor and customer portals, careers pages, and domains inherited through acquisitions. Each needs assets replaced, templates updated and content reviewed for references to the outgoing name.

See global website rollout for how a multi-market change is sequenced.

The document library is usually the largest item

Datasheets, installation and maintenance manuals, declarations of conformity, drawings and catalogues frequently run to several thousand files, many held only as finished artwork with no editable source.

Deciding what is reissued, what is reissued on next revision and what is left as historical record has more effect on the estimate than any other single choice. It is the question to answer before quoting.

Product marking, packaging and certification

Nameplates, moulded or etched markings, labels and packaging artwork carry production lead times and existing stock. Certification documents, type approvals and declarations naming a legal entity may need reissuing through the certification body on its own schedule.

These set the critical path more often than design work does, which is why they are inventoried before a timeline is offered.

Channel and physical touchpoints

Distributor catalogues and listings, trade association and marketplace directories, exhibition stands, signage, vehicle livery, workwear and templates in ERP and PIM systems all carry the identity and are updated on different cycles.

Coordination across those cycles is the work being priced. The physical production itself usually runs through existing suppliers and sits outside the rollout estimate.

How the scope is built

We inventory the touchpoints, identify the constraints that fix the sequence, and set the transition period during which both identities are visible. The estimate follows from those three things.

Identity design is scoped separately from rollout. See rebrand rollout for what the sequencing work involves and brand identity for the stage before it.

Rebrand rollout questions

How much does a rebrand rollout cost?

It depends on the inventory and the constraints rather than on a standard rate. The drivers are the number of markets, the size of the technical document library, whether product marking, packaging and certification documents carry the outgoing identity, the number of digital properties, and how long both identities have to coexist. We scope against those before quoting.

What drives the cost most on an industrial rebrand?

Usually the technical document library. Several thousand datasheets, manuals and declarations of conformity, many held only as finished artwork without editable sources, represent more work than the website and the identity design combined. The decision on what is reissued immediately, what waits for the next revision and what stays as historical record moves the figure most.

Is the identity design included in a rollout estimate?

They are normally scoped separately. Identity design produces the system, and rollout applies it across markets, documents, marking and digital properties. Combining them into one figure tends to understate the rollout, since the coordination work scales with the estate rather than with the design. See brand identity for the earlier stage.

Can the rollout be staged to spread the cost?

Usually, and staging is often necessary for reasons other than budget. Certification reissue, packaging stock and production lead times rarely align to one date. Sequencing also reduces risk, since issues found in the first market can be corrected before the rest follow. The transition period does need managing, so both identities are explained rather than simply coexisting.

What about certification documents and product marking?

These frequently set the critical path. Declarations, type approvals and certificates naming a legal entity may need reissuing through the certification body on its own schedule, and nameplates, labels and packaging carry production lead times and existing stock. Inventory them early, since the timeline tends to be built around them rather than around the creative work.

When should rollout planning start?

As soon as the identity direction is settled, and before a launch date is announced. Certification reissue and packaging production run on external schedules that cannot be compressed, and the document library inventory takes time to compile. Planning after the launch date is fixed tends to shorten the phase with the least flexibility in it.
